Cabo Frio: Vasco fanatic names his son after a player
A resident of Cabo Frio and security guard, Joelson Fernandes de Souza, 36 years old and a father of four, was excited when he found out that his wife was pregnant again: “This one I’m going to do something special.” He is a fanatic Vasco da Gama supporter and wanted to find a way to pay homage to his beloved club in the name of his upcoming son. So he decided to register the child as “Kelvin Payet Brito Fernandes,” in honor of the French number 10 player for Vasco.
The mother, a Flamengo supporter named Thainá Brito, didn’t like the idea, but she couldn’t do anything when the baby was born on Thursday (22) at a local hospital. Despite her reluctance, Joelson went to the hospital registry office and officially named the child after the athlete. He almost managed to include “Vasco” in the name as well.
“As soon as we found out about the pregnancy, I said, ‘The name has to be Vasco, there’s no other choice.’ I told her, ‘It’s going to be Kelvin Payet Brito Fernandes.’ She said, ‘You’re crazy, I’ll leave you. It would just be one more child support anyway (laughs),’ ” the security guard recounted.
“I said, ‘If the birth certificate comes into my hands, it’s going to be Kelvin Payet Vasco.’ She doubted me. When my son was born, who was holding the paper? I wanted to put Vasco, but when I went to register, the registrar wouldn’t allow it. ‘Either you put Payet or Vasco.’ It was difficult to remove Payet or Vasco, so I decided to keep Payet because he’s a tough player, he came when no one else wanted to,” added the Vasco fanatic.
The image of the birth certificate with the name Kelvin Payet was shared by the page “News Almirante” on social media and quickly went viral. Joelson, whose other four children are Vasco supporters “who can’t even stand the mention of Flamengo,” said that his wife has calmed down due to the attention the story received. They have been together for nine years.
The name Kelvin was chosen by Thainá. “When she mentioned it, I agreed: ‘That’s right, Kelvin played for Vasco, it’s all about Vasco,'” joked the father, referring to the forward who played for the club from 2017 to 2018. “But I’m not even going to call him Kelvin, it will just be ‘Payetzinho’ (laughs),” he concluded.
